IRMO, S.C. - Jamar Winston, a 6-foot-8, 240-pound defensive end at Dutch Fork, has some major upside. Just ask his coach, Tommy Knotts, one of America’s best. “The sky is the limit for him,” Knotts told Tigerillustrated.com Thursday morning at his high school. “He has that God given wingspan and height. ”The junior is as raw as all get up. He’s just scratching the surface of his upside. “He went through an awkward stage during his 9th and 10th years,” Knotts said. “Jamar is just starting to grow into his body. He’s a hard worker in the weight room and knows what he has to do. At some point he’ll be a great player down the road because he’s an athlete.” The 2013 recruit bench presses 295 pounds, squats 390 pounds, power cleans 265 pounds, runs a 4.93-second 40-yard dash and holds a 2.5 GPA. As a junior, at defensive end, Winston racked up 37 tackles, four sacks, a forced fumble, six pass breakups and returned an interception for a touchdown. This winter, playing center for Dutch Fork’s basketball team, Winston averaged 12 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. And just recently he’s just starting to leak onto college’s radars. Kentucky was first to show interest. North Carolina State offensive line coach Jim Bridge stopped by his school late last month. “He’s a nice, straightforward guy,” Winston said. Clemson offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell did the same in January. “He’s a nice guy and gave me a firm handshake so you know he’s a respectable guy,” Winston said. “I like Clemson. To me, they have a good defensive line. They have a good staff and know a lot about football.” Winston camped at South Carolina last summer and plans to do the same at Clemson, South Carolina and Kentucky this summer. Who leads? “Kentucky, Clemson, NC State, South Carolina and East Carolina,” Winston listed. “Kentucky is very consistent and interested in seeing what I can do. They were the first ones to contact me.” The jumbo athlete has an idea of what he’d like in his eventual college. “A good education program,” Winston said. “With a good law and legal services program. Plus a place with a great faculty staff and school.”
